How the South Asian numbering system is written

Numbers above 99,999 use lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000) instead of million. The tool groups digits from the right as 3, then 2, then 2 and so on, so 12500000 appears as 1,25,00,000.

FigureEnglishUrdu
125One Hundred Twenty-Fiveایک سو پچیس
1,250One Thousand Two Hundred Fiftyایک ہزار دو سو پچاس
125,000One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousandایک لاکھ پچیس ہزار
1,250,000Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousandبارہ لاکھ پچاس ہزار
12,500,000One Crore Twenty-Five Lakhایک کروڑ پچیس لاکھ

Convention used: tens and units are joined with a hyphen (Twenty-Five), no word and is placed between hundreds and tens, and each part is capitalised. Urdu has a separate word for every number from 0 to 99, so the tool uses a full lookup table instead of rules.

Financial amount or invoice number?

Financial amount mode reads 125000.50 as Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand and Fifty Paisa Only. Invoice number mode reads INV 100245 style digits one by one and never adds currency. Do not use an invoice number mode for money.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a cheque amount in words in Pakistan?

Write the full amount in words starting near the left edge so nothing can be added, include rupees and any paisa, and many people end with the word Only. Banks can have their own requirements, so ask your bank if you are unsure.

What is the difference between amount in words and invoice number in words?

An amount such as 125,000 is read as a quantity: One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand. An invoice number such as 100245 is an identifier and is read digit by digit: One Zero Zero Two Four Five. Use the matching mode.

How is 1,250,000 written in words?

In the South Asian system it is Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousand. In Urdu script it is بارہ لاکھ پچاس ہزار.

What is the largest amount supported?

Up to 14 digits, which is 9,99,99,99,99,99,999 in South Asian grouping. Larger values are rejected rather than guessed.

How are paisa handled?

Two decimal places are read as paisa. If you type more than two decimals the tool shows a message, unless you tick the option to round to the nearest paisa (half up).

Will every bank accept this wording?

We cannot say. The output is a suggestion based on standard number names. Banks and institutions may apply their own rules, so check before relying on it.

Is the Urdu wording authoritative financial terminology?

The Urdu number words are generated from a fixed table of Urdu numerals and the standard words for hundred, thousand, lakh and crore. Currency terms are kept simple. Have important documents checked by a qualified person.

Sources: numbering names follow common South Asian usage. No official banking source is cited, so wording rules should be confirmed with your bank.
