Worked examples
- 5% of 2,000,000 = 100,000.
- 15% off 8,000 = 6,800, so you save 1,200.
- 2% commission on 15,000,000 = 300,000 per party.
- Cost 1,000 sold at 1,250: profit 250, margin 20%, markup 25%.
- 12,000 split among 4 people = 3,000 each.
Markup versus margin, and points versus percent
Markup uses cost as the base and margin uses selling price as the base, so the same profit always shows a lower margin than markup. In the same way, a change measured in percentage points is a plain subtraction of two rates, while percentage change is relative to the starting value.
Division by zero is blocked with a message. Negative numbers are accepted only in modes where they make sense, such as percent of a number and percentage change.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 5 percent of an amount?
Multiply the amount by 5 and divide by 100. For 2,000,000 that is 100,000. Use the first mode and enter the percentage and the number.
What is the difference between markup and profit margin?
Markup is profit divided by cost. Margin is profit divided by selling price. Selling 1,000 of cost at 1,250 is a 25% markup but a 20% margin.
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
If a rate rises from 10% to 12%, it moves 2 percentage points, but it has increased by 20% relative to its starting value.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the final price by one minus the discount rate. A final price of 6,800 after 15% off gives 6,800 ÷ 0.85 = 8,000.
How do I calculate a property dealer commission?
Multiply the sale amount by the agreed rate. The calculator also shows the total if the same rate is charged to both parties. Agreed rates differ, so enter the rate you have agreed in writing.
Does this calculator know current taxes or government fees?
No. Tax, transfer, stamp duty and registration rates change and vary by case. You enter the rate yourself and the tool only does the arithmetic. Check current rates with the relevant authority or an adviser.
How is rounding handled?
Results are rounded to the precision you choose, from 0 to 4 decimal places, using standard half up rounding at display time.
